Interventional procedures use medical imaging, such as ultrasound, CT or X-ray, to guide a specialist precisely to the area being treated or investigated.
These procedures are often minimally invasive, using a small needle or tube rather than traditional surgery. Image guidance helps the radiologist perform the procedure with accuracy while minimising disruption to surrounding tissue.

WHEN MIGHT I NEED AN INTERVENTIONAL PROCEDURE?
Targeted Procedures for Diagnosis and Treatment
Your doctor or specialist may refer you for an interventional procedure when a more precise, image-guided approach is needed.
Depending on your referral and clinical needs, this may involve diagnostic sampling, targeted treatment or assistance with fluid drainage.
Interventional procedures may be used for:
- Image-guided biopsies to collect a tissue sample
- Drainage of fluid collections
- Targeted injections or pain-management procedures
- Placement of a line, tube or catheter
- Investigation or treatment of certain blood vessel conditions
- Monitoring or managing a known condition
- Supporting a treatment plan recommended by your specialist
