What is an OPG?
A Complete View of Your Teeth and Jaws
An orthopantomogram, or OPG, is a panoramic dental X-ray that captures the entire mouth in a single image. It provides a broad view of the teeth, upper and lower jaws, jaw joints and surrounding structures.
Unlike a standard dental X-ray, an OPG is taken with the imaging equipment rotating around your head, with no sensor placed inside your mouth. It is a quick, comfortable examination that can help your dentist or specialist assess the position and condition of your teeth and jaw.
There is usually little preparation required. You may be asked to remove jewellery, glasses, dentures or other metal items around the head and neck before your scan. Please let our team know if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
WHEN MIGHT I NEED DENTAL IMAGING?
Clear Imaging for Informed Dental Care
Dental imaging and OPGs give your dentist or specialist a wider view than standard intraoral X-rays. They may be used to investigate dental concerns, support treatment planning or monitor the development of teeth and jaw structures.
Your dentist, orthodontist or oral surgeon may refer you for an OPG to assess:
- Impacted or emerging wisdom teeth
- Tooth position and development
- Orthodontic treatment planning
- Dental implant planning
- Jaw pain or temporomandibular joint concerns
- Cysts, infections or bone changes in the jaw
- Dental trauma or facial injuries
- Sinus concerns visible around the upper jaw
Your radiographer will guide you through the appointment and make sure you are comfortably positioned for clear imaging.
